This is the way most people do it by rezzing a platform on the ground and then sending it up into the sky. If you find this a little tricky then you might want to consider the other way of doing it which is also quite simple ( once you know of course ).
This does exactly the same thing. Rather than send a platform into to the sky you can actually rez it in the sky instead using basic chat commands. If you type gth in public chat followed by the height that you wish to teleport to say 1000 then you will magically arrive at your destination. Make sure you are in flight mode before you try it. Typing rezplat in the sky will rez a platform for you.
